We constantly make decisions – and lots of them! Since our first day in kindergarten , we’ve been taught how to solve problems and make decisions.
But the way we’ve been taught to make decisions is all wrong! There is a better way.
Here is the greatest decision-making mistake we make and what to do instead.
Our Greatest Decision-Making Mistake
God gave us a brain. He intends for us to use it.
For over 30 years, I’ve taught executives, business people, and even college students how to use everything from Aristotelian logic (deductive, inductive, analogous reasoning) to simple formulas (define the problems, find causes, generate solutions, develop actions, execute and monitor).
There is NOTHING inherently wrong with any of this…except is misses the one critical element that can elevate your decision making to a much higher level of success.
What To Do Instead
The most critical element of superior decision making is to allow the Holy Spirit to make the final decision.
For many of us, this is still a stretch. Our natural reaction is to just think about it, add up the pluses and minuses, lift up a quick prayer and make the decision.
Yet always within us is the One who knows:
- Everything about everything (1 Corinthians 2:9)
- Even the deep things of God (1 Corinthians 2:10)
- Things that have been freely given to us by God (1 Corinthians 2:12)
- All things to come and will guide us in all truth (John 16:13)
He will never lead you into a bad deal, a money losing initiative, a dumb hire, or partnering with a terrible person.
He will always lead you into a good place with good people for good reasons with good (even great) results.
He is the smartest consultant / advisor / mentor in history, and He is available to us for FREE 24/7.
So, what can you do?
Use your head…but let Holy Spirit make the final decision!
Just like David who often inquired of the Lord before battle (1 Samuel 23:2), he was using his head but allowing the Spirit of God to make the final battle decision.
God does not lead you by your Holy Mind!
